Movement Notes

There are moments in life when you realize something you have known since childhood had untapped potential all along, and you feel a little betrayed that nobody told you sooner. That is exactly what happened when I encountered chocolate caramel crispy treats. Regular rice crispy squares were already solid citizens of the snack world, reliable and honest, the kind of treat you would bring to a bake sale without worrying about scaring anyone. But then someone went and melted Mars bars into them, and suddenly it was as if your dependable neighbor had revealed a secret double life as an international spy. The transformation is dramatic and immediate. You take your innocent puffed rice and coat it in a sticky, gooey cascade of caramel and chocolate that binds everything together with the determination of a mother-in-law who has decided you are staying for dinner. Press that glorious mess into a pan, and then, because clearly restraint is not part of this recipe, you spread an entire layer of melted milk chocolate across the top like you are icing a very chaotic, very delicious cake. The hardest part of making these is the waiting. You have to let them set. You have to stand there in your kitchen, staring at a pan of the most incredible smelling thing you have ever created, and simply exist in that state of wanting for what feels like an eternity. I have failed this step more times than I care to admit, cutting into still-soft squares that collapsed into beautiful rubble that I ate with a fork while standing over the sink. These treats are dangerously easy to make, which means they are dangerously easy to make at eleven o'clock at night when your defenses are down and your judgment is impaired by a rerun of a cooking show. Consider yourself warned, but also, consider yourself extremely fortunate because these little squares of chaos are absolutely worth whatever trouble they cause your waistline.
